Tree (Vrukshasana)

The tree exercise is ancient and beautiful to look at. There are different variations of this asana. Among the benefits of regularly performing this asana are build up of stamina and strength in the legs and arms. The muscles are toned and the whole body is infused with energy. This exercise is an excellent meditative pose and wherever possible should be incorporated into your lifestyle. While performing the tree exercise why not try some visualization to help you. Believe you are an ancient tree. Look at your branches and the tiny green buds of leaves that are growing on your body. Enjoy the scent of spring. Enjoy the scents of nature and watch the birds taking refuge on your branches and the insects crawling over you. Believe in your wisdom and your capacity to nurture and give sustenance to others.

1 Stand up and keep spine and head up. Lift both arms above the head and bring palms together.

2 Lift right leg and place your foot into the side of the knee on the left leg (or vice versa).

3 Balance yourself on the one leg. Stare into the distance.

4 Hold position for at least thirty seconds. Visualise the energy moving through your body.
